Loose Parts, Limitless Learning:
Understanding and Supporting Open-Ended, Child-Led Play
Loose parts - whether natural elements, recyclables, or found materials - are powerful tools in early learning environments. These open-ended resources encourage children to explore, invent, and direct their own play, offering meaningful opportunities for growth across developmental domains. In an age of screen time and overscheduling, loose parts play offers a refreshing, research-informed approach rooted in curiosity, autonomy, and creativity.
This workshop focuses on the role of child-led, educator-supported play. Participants will gain a clear understanding of what loose parts are, why they matter, and how they contribute to cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development. We’ll discuss how to foster a mindset that embraces open-ended play and how to thoughtfully integrate loose parts into both indoor and outdoor environments.
We’ll also connect this practice to the principles of Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework, highlighting how loose parts support responsive, holistic learning. Strategies for engaging families and other stakeholders will be shared, helping build a shared vision for play-based learning that extends beyond the program.
Whether you're just beginning to explore loose parts or seeking to refine your approach, this session offers practical insight and renewed inspiration to make play more intentional, inclusive, and transformative.
We’d love to have you join us for this playful and inspiring session!
