The Primary Steps of Observation and Documentation

Our workshop The Primary Steps of Observation and Documentation: Making Meaning of Children's Play and Program Planning welcomes all levels of educators, especially those individuals new to the field. For those looking to expand and build upon their existing knowledge and skill sets, we suggest our follow-thru workshop entitled The Secondary Steps of Observation, Reflection, and Implementation: Extending Upon Children’s Play and Focusing Upon Behaviours.


Our primary workshop provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the initial steps of observation and documentation, emphasizing the significance of making meaning of children’s play and reflecting upon that play to create effective program planning. Through interactive group work and tangible practice, educators will gain practical skills and insights to enhance their professional practice.


The content of this workshop includes:

  • The 3 steps of program planning of noticing, naming and nurturing, relating our work to Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework.
  • The purpose of observation and documentation, and its relevance to daily program planning, with particular focus on children’s interests and extended learning.
  • The exploration of anecdotal/running records and play schemas.
